This year my first visit at the construction site of UP! Berlin yielded another handful of wonderful images. Having accompanied the construction since last year I am intrigued how much the transformation has been proceeding. Two more storeys were added and the facade is almost finished now.
Built in 1979 this giant concrete structure north of Berlin Ostbahnhof formerly housed the GDR Centrum Warenhaus and later the chain store Kaufhof. It is being converted into a new office and retail building. Jasper Architects developed quite an unorthodox concept: the cubic volume with its 80x80 meters footprint has parts of its concrete structure removed on all four sides. The block perforation is designed to optimize solar gain and to increase layout functionality.
Did you know there's the possibility for everyone to get a glimpse inside? On 28th June in the scope of the Berlin Architecture Days designing architect Mr. Jasper will introduce the concept on site.robertherrmann.com
